Stewart Pope to Receive 2023 Brown-Forman Spirit of Justice Award at the Inaugural Journey to Justice Event on September 8, 2023

STEWART FOR THE PEOPLE

"Working for Legal Aid Society has been the highlight of my professional career. I have been privileged to work with some of the finest attorneys and administrative staff in the business. Helping give voice to the underserved and unrepresented in our community provides for extremely gratifying work."

Legal Aid Society will hold our inaugural Journey to Justice: Your Passport Awaits fundraising event, presented by First Class Sponsor Atria Senior Living, on Friday, September 8, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at the corporate campus of Atria Senior Living on East Market Street in Louisville.

Journey to Justice is a casual event that allows guests the opportunity to network with over 300 legal professionals and community leaders, all while enjoying gourmet hors d'oeuvres and tastings of Kentucky spirits. Guests will chart a course through the event space, following the Legal Aid story of four clients journeying to four destinations: Housing Justice, Family Justice, Economic Justice, and Community Justice. At each destination, guests will have their Justice for All Passports stamped and enjoy a refreshment. Guests who sign up to volunteer or donate the night of the event will be entered to win a bottle of our 100th Anniversary Woodford Reserve Bourbon.

Tickets are $125 and may be purchased in advance or at the door. To purchase tickets in advance, click here

Brown-Forman Spirit of Justice Award

At Journey to Justice, we will celebrate our 8th Annual Brown-Forman Spirit of Justice Award - long-time Legal Aid Society Advocacy Director Stewart Pope. This award is given to a member of the community who demonstrates a deep dedication to upholding the principles of equal justice.

After 23 years of service at Legal Aid Society, Mr. Pope will retire in December. He started with Legal Aid Society as a Staff Attorney in our Housing Unit after practicing law in the private sector for nearly 10 years. During those 10 years, he engaged in the general practice of law with a focus on property, business, and family law. In addition to the legal experience that he brought with him to Legal Aid Society, Stewart worked for fifteen years in the business sector, gaining valuable experience in sales and management before attending law school. Following his service as a Staff Attorney, Stewart became the Senior Attorney of our Housing Unit and then moved into the role of Advocacy Director in 2005.

"Through the years, Stewart has become the "go-to" for many things," says Executive Director Jefferson Coulter. "Stewart's phone is always buzzing with texts and calls – cases, clients, grant restrictions, government regulations, putting furniture together, repairing the Keurig – you name it, staff calls Stewart about it."

"Stewart has been indispensable over the last few years as more of our community has faced one crisis after the other, and the need for Legal Aid has grown," says Board Chair Bart Greenwald, Founding Partner of Duncan Galloway Greenwald. "On behalf of the Board, we are honored to recognize Stewart in this meaningful way."

For Mr. Pope, his work has always been about people. "Working for Legal Aid Society has been the highlight of my professional career," said Mr. Pope. "I have been privileged to work with some of the finest attorneys and administrative staff in the business. Helping give voice to the underserved and unrepresented in our community provides for extremely gratifying work."
