Legal Aid Society provides free civil legal assistance to individuals and families who qualify for our services. Below you’ll find answers to some commonly asked questions, like how to apply for services or how to prepare for your first appointment.   • The first thing you should do is call the Legal Aid Society at (502) 584-1254 or (800) 292-1862. Our services are always free. When you call our office, you will be asked questions about where you live, your income, and your legal problem. If you qualify for our services, we will schedule an appointment for you with one of our staff members who will review your application. Please keep in mind we are not able to help with criminal cases, but we do help with criminal record expungements.

    Our intake line is open Monday through Thursday between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Our intake line is closed on Fridays.

  • Legal Aid Society serves Kentuckians living at or below 125% to 200% of the federal poverty line. If you have questions as to whether or not you qualify, please give us a call at (502) 584-1254 or (800) 292-1862. We will go through the intake process with you and ask a series of questions to determine your eligibility. If we are unable to help you we will provide information regarding referrals through the Kentucky Lawyer Referral Service.

  • The Legal Aid Society offers our services to residents living in the following counties: Breckinridge, Bullitt, Grayson, Hardin, Henry, Jefferson, Larue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble & Washington Counties. If you do not live in one of these counties, visit www.kyjustice.org to find a civil legal aid office near you.

  • Our Louisville office is open Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

    Our Shelby County office is open Monday through Thursday 9 am to 4 PM.

    Applicants may walk in to our office to complete a written application. Because the demand for our services is high, our legal staff may not be able to meet with you on the same visit at which you complete the application. Instead, we will accept your application, review it, and then call you back. If you have an urgent or special need, please let us know. Some same day appointments are available under special circumstances.

  • Our Louisville office is located Downtown at 416 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd, Ste. 300, between Fourth and Fifth Streets. A restaurant is on the first floor of our building. From the lobby, take the elevator to the third floor.

    Street parking is available. Several surface lots are within walking distance of our building. We do not validate parking.

    Our Shelby County office is located at 203 Alpine Drive, Shelbyville, KY 40065. Parking is available.

  • You should bring the following items with you to your first appointment:

    • Any papers, notices, correspondence, or court filings relevant to your case.

    • Any other information you believe you should show to our staff.

    At your appointment, a staff member will ask you questions and discuss your case.

    If you need an interpreter, we can provide one for you. Please let the receptionist know you need an interpreter when you call.

    If you are not able to make it to your appointment, please call us in advance at (502) 584-1254 or (800) 292-1862 and let us know.

  • We provide translation services to applicants and clients with Limited English Proficiency free of charge. Please let our receptionist know if you require a translator.

  • We recognize that our clients have a variety of needs and concerns. Our office is fully accessible. Should you need accommodations, please let us know, and we are happy to help.
